Weekly Wrap up- The Christmasville Edition

This week was a busy one- lots getting done but not all of it school.

On Monday we went on a field trip to Discovery Place, our local science museum, with another homeschool family. They have been remodeling and had reopened a section of the museum with a new exhibit. The family we went with is a friend of mine from growing up days who has lived out of town and recently moved back with her husband and now four children. Some of our children are the same ages, and it was nice to reconnect and let the kids get to know each other. I also discovered that the Monday after a holiday weekend is a great time for a field trip because schools don't do field trips that day!

On Tuesday we did manage to do some regular school work and accomplished quite a bit. We are doing a Jesse Tree again this Advent season and using that as a mini unit for school. We are also continuing to read The Pilgrim Stories. I am aware that is after Thanksgiving, but we are enjoying them and want to finish the whole series. Kathryne is trying to finish up her Delta book in Math-U-See in order to be able to start Epsilon after Christmas. My goal is to finish up with all work this coming week and then take off school until after Christmas.

Wednesday, we continued on with school work in the morning. That afternoon, Charles had guitar lessons, and we went to the church to be Church Mice. This has become a December tradition for us. Church Mice come in during the week to straighten hymn books, pick up trash in the pews, sharpen the pencils, etc. We like to do it in December because the sanctuary is so pretty decorated for Christmas. The kids had practice for their choir Christmas program on Wednesday evening, and then Kathryne had two friends come to spend the night.

On Thursday all the kids, friends included decorated gingerbread houses. We usually do a big house all together, but since I knew we would have friends over, I bought a kit with five small houses this year and let the big kids all do their own and the little girls share one.

Friday was our Fun Friday co-op. This was our last week because we will miss the last one due to family Christmas things.

Christmasville- our city Christmas celebration was this weekend. Various activities went on downtown all weekend. We saw decorated gingerbread houses, a live nativity, crafts at the library, a Christmas train, and other Christmas goodies. On Saturday morning, Charles and Jason ran in the Reindeer Romp, their first 5K run!

We finished our weekend with our church's choir Christmas program including the big choir, orchestra, handbells, praise and worship team, and children's choir. It was a fun way to usher in the Advent season. Charles and Kathryne are in the elementary children's choir.

I expect this week to be a little less busy and hope we can finish up our needed school work and have a Christmas break!

  2. That was a busy week! We've been to Discovery Place, but not for a while. The museum we went to last week was Catawba in Hickory. (But we don't live in Hickory, we're in the Triad.) Nice to find a relatively local homeschooler on-line.
