The Homeschool Mother's Journal: June 1, 2012

  • In my life this week…
We are on a school break. We have some late sleeping days and fun activities.  Monday was Memorial Day, and we all went to the campground to hang out with family that are all camping there this week.  Charles has spent several nights at the campground hanging out with cousins.

On Tuesday, we had a pretty laid back day with nowhere to go until Rachel's swim practice in the evening.

On Wednesday, I took the kids to the Y water park.  I didn't realize that we were getting so lucky as to have chosen a day before public schools were out, so we had the water park almost to ourselves.

On Thursday morning, the girls and I went and helped with field day at our Children's Attention Home.  It was a really hot day, but it was lots of fun helping and seeing the fun the kids had.  Thursday night was Rachel's first swim meet.  I was very proud of her because she swam the entire lap three different times.  She is not a great swimmer, but she has learned so much so far this summer and has become a better and better swimmer.

Today was another slow day.  The big kids have headed back to the campground for one final night, and the little girls and I have been hanging around.

  • In our homeschool this week…
No school has been going on.  Next week that will change when we start our summer unit.
  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Take a break when you need a break.  I don't plan our breaks- except for a general sense of times I want to be through with school.  We have set quarters of the school year, but we take a break when we need one.
  • I am inspired by…
Healthy food blogs/sites I've been reading.  I've especially enjoyed Eating Well, and I've been looking for lots of information about quick meals on the go, so that as we are running from activity to activity, we can still eat healthy.
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We've been spending lots of time with family this week back and forth to the campground.  We ran into some homeschool friends at the water park on Wednesday.  Sometimes those impromptu meetings turn out to be the most fun.
  • My favorite thing this week was…
Mornings to sleep late!  Woohoo!
  • What’s working/not working for us…
Our current plans for managing tv/electronics has not been working, and it does not bode well for the summer.  So, this morning we had a little family pow wow and discussed electronics usage.  It's always good to have a family meeting and do a little reevaluating and restructuring now and then.
  • Questions/thoughts I have…
So, I've been reading through and looking at all the information about the Bento box craze.  I would love to have these for packing quick and healthy meals to go for us.  But, I cannot even imagine paying  what these things cost.  So, I'm considering cheaper alternatives that might accomplish the same thing for me.  Hmmm.
  • Things I’m working on…
Still cataloging all our books with Library Thing.  I had some time to work on it this week!
  • I’m reading…
I just finished a Cindy Woodsmall Amish story- The Scent of Cherry Blossoms.  I'm now reading a free book for Kindle and still reading The Great Divorce by C.S. Lewis.
  • I’m cooking…
Hmm, not much (my typical answer).  We actually had frozen pizza for supper tonight since half the family is gone.  Does heating up the oven for that count?
  • I’m grateful for…
The privilege of homeschooling.  I know I say it often, but I can't say it enough.  Having the bigger kids all gone to drama camp last week and now Charles gone camping for much of this week reminds me all over again what a blessing it is to have all my kids near me all the time.  Sometimes I might get frustrated with it all, but I wouldn't trade it for anything!
  • I’m praying for…
So many sweet friends online and in real life who are dealing with terminal illness.  My heart is always heavy for them.
  • A photo, video, link, or quote to share…
I shared this earlier in the week, but I love it enough to share again.  In the drama camp performance last Friday, the kids sang Where I Belong- one of my favorite songs.  I kept thinking of Reepicheep in The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and how he was always looking for Aslan's country.  I wanted to put the image of Reepicheep sailing on to the music of that song.  So, I played around with some video editing (I had never done this before!) and came up with this:
