Homeschool Mother's Journal: November 2, 2012

  • In my life this week…
Life has moved at a slower pace since I'm not working in the afternoons.  I still have pain, but my days are more manageable when I have time to rest in the afternoons.
  • In our homeschool this week…
We finished up  our first quarter (August - October).  I compiled grades and made out report cards- a first for us.  We took a break from most of our normal studies and read an election book and completed a free election lapbook that I found online.  It was a good end of the quarter break.  The kids enjoy lapbooking for the most part, so it was a somewhat fun week of school.

Yesterday we had a field trip to Ray's Splash Planet, an indoor water park in Charlotte, NC.  It turned out to be only us and one other family we knew going with our group, but we had lots of fun.

Today was co-op.  The big kids took portrait pictures in photography class, made calzones in cooking class, and played science review games in science.  The little girls made a pinata as they studied Mexico.  They also had book club and puppets, but in the excitement over the pinatas, I haven't yet learned what they did in those classes today.
  • Helpful homeschooling tips or advice to share…
Plan.  I am a planner by nature, so I guess this comes easy for me.  But sometimes I don't do it, and our school always suffers.  It can be a flexible plan, but plan.
  • Places we’re going and people we’re seeing…
We saw friends on Wednesday when we went Trick-or Treating with them.  And we saw friends yesterday when we went on our field trip.  And we saw friends today at co-op.  I'm so glad we are unsocialized homeschoolers.
  • What’s working/not working for us…
All things school related are going well.  Our lapbook was fun.  And I hope to finish my 2nd quarter plans tomorrow.
  • Things I’m working on…
Our 2nd quarter school plans.  I plan for a quarter at a time.  That makes my weekly planning easy because all I have to do is cut and paste the plans right into my weekly assignment sheets.  I don't put it dates.  I just count and make sure I have the right number of days.  That way if we get behind or have to change something it is no big deal.

I almost hate to admit it because I'm not sure it will work out.  But, I am attempting to write a 50,000 word novel for NaNoWriMo.  I've always wanted to write a book.  So, I figure I can write as much as I'm able this month with no stress and see what comes out.  Who knows?  It could be the start of something good.
  • I’m reading…
The Bible in 90 days.  We are getting close to the end!  I've just finished the gospels which were neat to read chronologically.  The chronological Bible I was reading put every account of the same event together.  So I read the same thing multiple times from different perspectives.
  • I’m cooking…
I actually made a new recipe this week that at least most of us liked.  It was Caramel Apple Pork Chops. It is a recipe from How Does She Do It.  Pork is not usually my favorite.  But I must admit that cooked in the sauce with apples on top, I actually liked it!
  • I’m grateful for…
My husband who loves me and loves our kids.  I know I say that one often, but it is really true.  I know so many people right now who are going through some bad things in their marriages.  My heart breaks for them.  And I thank God for my husband who loves God and loves me and loves our kids.
  • I’m praying for…
Hurricane Sandy victims.  I don't watch the news often. but I've seen things going around Facebook and other social media, and I feel for those who lost possessions and even loved ones.

And here is my photo of the week: our little jack-o-lantern family.
