Sponsoring a Child Through Compassion
Several years ago, I read the book Radical by David Platt. I was very touched and inspired. As a result, I talked to the family about how we could incorporate some of the ideas in the book. One thing we decided to do was to sponsor a child.
I believe that God's command to us as Christians is to care for the orphans. (James 1:27-Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.) At this point in our lives, we cannot physically or financially adopt- although it is a goal we have for later. But sponsorship is something we can do.
We decided as a family to give up something we liked. Every other Sunday we used to go by McDonalds on the way home from AWANA. Fast food for a family of 6 is not cheap. We decided to forgo our McDonalds and use the money for sponsorship. We let Charles pick a boy- because we have so many girls. He picked James- a boy around his age who lives in the Philippines.
James writes us frequently. He draws us pictures, and writes Bible verses. He calls me "Mom Leah." The kids love, love, love to look for mail from James. We always enjoy reading them, and I keep them in an album that Compassion gave us when we signed up.
April 21 is Compassion Sunday. You can read my Compassion story here, and if you sign up to sponsor a child, James's family can receive some bonus money this month!
