Why You Should Attend a Homeschool Convention This Year

We've attended a homeschool convention for quite a few years now. I love to go in the spring or summer when the conventions begin. We weren't able to go this spring, and I've found myself really missing out.

So why go to a homeschool convention? I've heard this question quite a few times.

Benefits of a homeschool convention

I knew that I would love a homeschool convention. I love classes. I could have been a perpetual college student given unlimited money and time. As a Christian school teacher, I loved the times we went to the Christian school conventions. I love workshops. I love speakers. I love the vendor hall.

But not everyone- including my husband- shares this love of classes and learning. So why go?

1. It is a couple's weekend away. This is the one and only reason Jason began to go with me to the conventions. We leave the kids, and we spend two nights in a hotel room. Alone. Enough said.

2. It is a wonderful way to see curriculum that you're thinking of before you buy it. After all these years of going, even Jason appreciates this one. If I can touch and see the curriculum in the vendor hall, I can much more easily decide if it fits us. Instead of buying it and then never using it. He realizes the money value of being able to shop the vendor hall. Often vendors offer special convention deals also.

3. Listening to great speakers can be inspiring and encouraging. We don't go to every workshop or every key note speaker. Part of the enjoyment for us is spending time together (See #1), so we balance speakers and shopping with spending time together. But we've come across some really good speakers. Last year we were privileged to hear Voddie Baucham in person. This year Pam Tebow is going to be in Spartanburg. Even Jason has found several speakers he was encouraged by.

4. It really is an encouragement to know you're not alone in this venture of homeschooling. Sometimes we can get discouraged and feel alone- especially if you don't have much support within your friends and family. It is so encouraging to meet with hundreds or thousands of like minded people. We are always amazed at how many homeschooling families there are.

If you find yourself with the opportunity to go to a convention this year, I can tell you it will be worth your time and money. You can have a good time away, and you can learn and be encouraged from other homeschoolers and speakers.

  1. Attending a homeschool convention sounds like a wonderful opportunity. It's a shame there are none close by that I know of. The downfall of living in a small rural town.

    1. The closest one that we go to is about an hour and half away. That's still close enough for a pretty easy drive and to not have to stay over night if we don't want to.
