What the Bible Has to Say About Feelings
This month's Hearts at Home blog hop topic is feelings. I don't like to talk about feelings. I don't really like to express my feelings. I thought about skipping this month all together. But this year's topics are all about "Love your..." So I'm seeing the irony in the fact that I don't want to talk about feelings in a post that is supposed to help me "love my feelings."
As I've had children and had the experience of being a mother, I've had to be a little more open about feelings. We've tried to teach our children healthy ways of expressing their feelings. In teaching my children about feelings, I've come to be a little more open to talking about and dealing with feelings. One thing that helps me to know how to respond to my children's feelings is to read what God says about feelings.
Proverbs 28:26 - We are not to trust in our feelings because they can be deceptive: "He who trusts in his own heart is a fool,But he who walks wisely will be delivered."
1 Corinthians 15:4-7- Love is NOT a feeling. It is action that we can control."4 Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant,5 does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, 6 does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth;7 bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things."
Ephesians 4:26-27- The feelings we have are not wrong, but we can choose not to act wrongly in response. "26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger, 27 and do not give the devil an opportunity"
Joshua 1:9- We don't have to be overcome with our feelings of fear because God is with us. "9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous! Do not tremble or be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go.”
Romans 8:9-11- When we are Christians, we have the Spirit of God and should not be controlled by our emotions but by the Spirit. "9 However, you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. But if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Him. 10 If Christ is in you, though the body is dead because of sin, yet the spirit is alive because of righteousness. 11 But if the Spirit of Him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, He who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through His Spirit who dwells in you."
Luke 6:45- Our emotions can be indicators of what is in our hearts."45 The good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth what is good; and the evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth what is evil; for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart."
2 Corinthians 10:5- We can take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ. "5 We are destroying speculations and every lofty thing raised up against the knowledge of God, and we are taking every thought captive to the obedience of Christ,"
Even though talking about feelings sometimes makes me uncomfortable, I can read God's Word to get an appropriate view of my feelings and to teach my children how to handle their feelings appropriately.
