Reading Aloud and Lapbooks: A Great Combination (Read Aloud Wednesdays)

When I first heard of lapbooking, I wasn't at all sure what people were talking about. Then I realized that this was a way to take the hobby of scrapbooking and use it with an educational spin. There may still be some scrapbookers around, but it was highly popular back in the dark ages when we actually used 35mm film and had our pictures developed after taking them. We would take these and add stickers and writing and decorations to make beautiful pages. In the same way lapbooking serves to create a scrapbook of sorts to provide a hands on way for kids to remember what they learn.

Lapbooking can be used in a variety of ways. Kids can create a lapbook to go along with a unit study. They can be used with nonfiction reading for kids to make a record of what they're learning. But I love literature lapbooks. When we can read a book and use lapbooking to make a hands on accompaniment to what we're reading, it gives us an opportunity to discuss the book and extend the things we're reading about. In this week's Read Aloud Wednesdays post I'm sharing some of my favorite literature based lapbook resources and links to lapbooks for some of our favorite books.

Where to find literature lapbooks...

Homeschool Share is my favorite go to site for lapbooks. There are many, many literature based lapbooks that can be downloaded for free. The lapbooks are divided by age level.

A Journey Through Learning has literature lapbooks. Some of these are lapbooks that can be used with many different books. Some go along with specific books.

Hands of a Child is another favorite resource for lapbooks. There are many literature based lapbooks that correspond with favorite kids' books.

Currclick is another great place to find a variety of literature based lapbooks.

Confessions of a Homeschooler has quite a few literature based lapbooks. These aren't free, but the prices are very reasonable, and she offers some bundles of literature lapbooks as well.
