A Collection of Literature and Theme-Based Unit Study Ideas (Read Aloud Wednesdays)

{This post may contain affiliate links.Read my disclosure here. }

One of my favorite topics about which to post is literature. I love good books. I love to develop unit studies around good books. And I often post ideas for creating your own unit study around a good book or a theme. In today's Read Aloud Wednesdays post I'm sharing a collection of some of the literature and theme-based unit studies that I've done here on the blog. And don't forget that you can link up your own reading themed posts in the link up below.

A collection of literature themed unit studies

Why unit studies?

I love unit studies for several reasons. First, a unit study can be adapted to include many ages of kids all at once. A unit study is something that the whole family can do together. These times of learning together can make schooling easier because I'm including multiple students in one plan. And they can provide fun and meaningful times of learning together. Anther reason I love unit studies is that they can be created to follow the interest of a child (or of me!). I can take a theme that we have an interest in and find books and activities related to that theme. One more reason that I love unit studies is that I can build a study around great books. Instead of dry reading out of a textbook, I'm reading good, living books and creating a whole study, including history and science and Bible and more, around those books.

Studies that are centered around a good book...

These studies are ones in which I've take a good book and given ideas and links for reading the book and expanding on it to include learning in a variety of academic areas.

Sarah, Plain and Tall

The Tale of Despereaux

The Door in the Wall

The Giving Tree

Charlotte's Web

The Sign of the Beaver

The Girl Who Loved Wild Horses

The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

The Bronze Bow

The 13 Clocks

Unit study themes...

These studies are ones in which I've taken a common theme and shared a book list or ideas and links for learning about the theme.

Healthy Living

Composers and Music

Oceans, Sharks, and Marine Life

Fun on the Farm

The Water Cycle

I hope that these posts give you a good starting point for creating your own unit studies. If there is a book or topic you'd love to do a unit study on, share it with me in the comments. I love looking for resources centered on a theme or book, and I'd love to write a post about a unit study that interests you.
