Got Kids Headed to College? Review of Welcome to College and College Survival Pack Giveaway

It's very hard for me to believe that I have a student who is very soon headed to college. It seems that just yesterday she was a preschooler and we were learning letters and numbers and reading picture books with Before Five in a Row. It really is true that the time flies by.

We work so hard to prepare our kids for college. But most of our preparation is academic. What about the spiritual preparation that our kids need to go out into the world on their own- often on secular college campuses? Statistics show that many, many "church" kids who would have identified themselves as believers when they were in high school turn away from their faith in college. There may be many reasons for this, but I think that often- especially for kids who have been homeschooled or in Christian schools- it's just because kids haven't been taught how to express and defend a Christian worldview in light of secular culture.

Spiritual preparation for college

I recently had the opportunity to review Welcome to College: A Christ-Follower's Guide for the Journey by Jonathan Morrow. I had my soon to be college student read through the book as well. We found a great guide that will introduce college bound kids to issues they'll face in college and give insight into how those issues relate to a Christian worldview.

Awesome Features of the Book

~The chapters in the book cover topics that college-bound kids are sure to face: moral relativism, the problem of evil and suffering, the existence of God, the conflict of evolution and the Bible, sharing the gospel, modesty, dating and sexuality, the internet, and more.
~ The book is written in an easy to read, conversational tone that kids will be able to read and relate to.
~ Each chapter ends with a summary box that gives a bullet point review of what the chapter covers as well as a list with additional resources that kids can use to learn more about the issues in that chapter.
~ There are some useful appendices that include a devotional reading plan for the first semester of college, a comparison of Christian and secular colleges, a philosophy resources section, a discussion guide that would make this great to use with a group, and a bibliography list of sources used to write the book.
~ Because of how the book is organized, it is easy to use as a reference if kids don't want to just read it straight through.

I love this book. We are really big on discussion and critical thinking here, and this book provides excellent discussion points to talk about with the kids. I recommend that you read it with your child and then discuss the topics. I think that with the included discussion guide, this would be an awesome book to go through in a homeschool co-op or high school Sunday School class or small group.
