The Subject I Most Enjoy Teaching- Blog Cruise

The Subject I Most Enjoy Teaching– Hmm, I thought this was a great topic for a blog cruise.

I’m going to give a little disclaimer here.  I was a teacher even before I had children.  Yes, I’m one of those.  I get so tired of hearing, “Well. you can homeschool because you have a teaching certificate.” Let me tell you, my friend, it is not true!  If anything I think we former teacher’s come in with a handicap.  We have so many expectations about what we think “school” should be that we wake up to an unwelcome surprise when our homes cannot function like a well-run classroom.

But, I digress.  All that to say, I am going to tell you two subjects that I most enjoy teaching.  One I have enjoyed teaching forever and one I love since homeschooling.

As a teacher, my favorite subject to teach was literature.  This will be no big surprise for anyone who knows me in real life.  I love to read. And I have a Masters Degree in Reading Education.  My love for teaching literature still remains. If it involves reading and discussing a book, I love to teach it. I love literature units. One of my very favorite literature units that we have done was Further Up and Further In, a literature unit using all of the Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis.

The other subject that has become my favorite since we’ve been homeschooling is history. I enjoyed history when I studied world history in high school, but as a teacher it wasn’t one of my favorites.  Our history curriculum for 2nd grade was pretty dry, and it seemed as if we did the same American history over and over and over.  When I stumbled into the world of classical learning and the novelty (to me) of studying world history in cycles, I became a lover of history again. This year we’re using Diana Waring’s history curriculum, and I am loving it!  I feel like I learn so much in each unit.

So, I love literature, and I love history.  For me, the most fun subjects to teach are the ones that I also enjoy learning.  That’s one of the greatest joys of homeschooling for me- always learning!

You can cruise along with the other Schoolhouse Review Crew members and find out all about others’ favorite subjects to teach here beginning February 12.
