A Great Resource to Teach About Haiti- I Came From the Water

I Came From the Water by Vanita Oelschlager and Mike Blanc is the true story of a young Haitian boy. Orphaned during a flood in 2004, he was found and taken to St. Helena’s orphanage. During the earthquake in Haiti, many other children came to St. Helena’s; and Moses helped them adjust to their new life. At age six he was interviewed by the author, and when asked where he came from, his answer was the book’s title.

The book is simple and easy to read. It has colorful illustrations. It’s a great way to teach young children about the needs of the people of Haiti. At the end of the book, pictures from the orphanage and the area are included.

Moses tells of Father Rick, the priest who runs St. Helena’s orphanage. The proceeds from the sale of I Came From the Water go to help Father Rick and St. Helena’s.

This was the perfect resource for us. We pray for the ministries of Samaritan’s Purse, and this month’s focus has been on Haiti and ministry to orphans there. We also have supported an orphanage in Haiti through friends from our homeschool co-op group.

I would definitely recommend this one to teach children to pray for orphans.
