Amazon Prime: How to Tell If It's Worth It for Your Family

I’m pretty amazed when people tell me they haven’t heard about Amazon Prime. It’s a service I’ve used for a couple of years now, and I wouldn’t want to do without it. But would it be good for your family? Is it worth it?

Join Amazon Prime – Watch Over 40,000 Movies A subscription costs $79 per year. These are some of the benefits you can get with Amazon Prime.

Free Two Day Shipping with no minimum purchase. Many, many items can be purchased using Prime free shipping. This differs from the free shipping that Amazon offers for purchases over $25. Many more items qualify for Prime shipping. There is no minimum to purchase for the free shipping. And Prime shipping is guaranteed two-day shipping.

Kindle Lending Library. If you own a Kindle, you can “check out” books from the lending library. You may check out one book each month and send the book to any Kindle device you have registered. Many of the Kindle books can be borrowed. To know if a book qualifies, check out the detail page to see if you see an Amazon Prime symbol.

Amazon Prime Videos. Many people don’t know it, but Amazon has a very large video selection. Movies can be rented or purchased and played over your computer, your Kindle, or other supported devices such as mobile phones, game consoles or some televisions. You can
see a list of devices here. If you are a Prime member, many of these videos are free. They are streaming videos and they included t.v. series, current movies, classic movies, children’s movies, etc. There are 1000s of movies to choose from.

So why would you want a Prime membership?

1. You love to order homeschool books– or any book for that matter. If you need a book NOW, it is great to be able to get it with free shipping and within two day.
2. You own a Kindle. I have loved my Prime membership with my Kindle. I borrow books from the lending library, and I watch Prime movies on my Kindle. It adds quite a bit of entertainment value to my Kindle.
3. You don’t have cable. Although we do have cable currently, we have not and usually do not have cable. It is nice to have a source of movies and t.v.

If it’s this great, why wouldn’t you want a Prime membership?

1. If you do not frequently order online. If you do most of your shopping in person and only order online, you probably don’t need a service like Prime. You can simply buy multiple things at once when you do order, and you can make sure it adds up to more than $25 for free shipping.

2. If you love Netflix. Amazon Prime will not take the place of Netflix. We do have Netflix, and there are many more movies and t.v. shows, and the offerings are more kid-friendly. I can find some good things to watch on Prime, but I wouldn’t say it is better than Netflix.
