Review of Jesus Light of the World: Praying the Scriptures Through Advent

Although I don’t enjoy the hustle and bustle of Christmas time, I do enjoy taking the time to focus specifically on Christ and His coming during this time. I look for ways to focus my heart- and the hearts of my kids- on Christ through some of the Advent traditions that we do. This year I have a new devotional I’ll be reading during our daily devotions time – Jesus, the Light of the World.

Candace Crabtree from His Mercy is New has done a beautiful job on creating a devotional that is a Word study on the word Light and that guides individuals and families in meditating on and praying through Scriptures about Jesus, the Light, through Advent. In the introduction Candace gives some information about word studies and why it’s been important to her to pray through Scripture. She also gives some ideas for individuals or homeschool families to use this devotional throughout December.
There are 31 days of readings here. Each day has a short Scripture passage about light, printed right in the book. Then there are some thoughts about the Scripture in a short reading and a suggested prayer that goes along with that Scripture. There are also journal pages to print and write your own prayer. Candace also links to Pinterest boards with ideas for using this book in your home, and she links to songs that your family can learn, listen to, and sing over Advent.

I love the focus on Jesus as Light. Having the Scripture printed out, along with the reference, is also nice because I can read directly out of the devotional. The devotional is versatile enough to use with the whole family, and I look forward to being able to use it with the kids over the month of December.
