Learning Geography In the Kitchen

This month's Poppins Book Nook is all about In the Kitchen. Our post is a little late because of the blog issues I've had. But I didn't want to miss out because I really enjoyed the book we used for this month.

How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World is the story of a little girl who wants to make an apple pie. The market is closed, so she ends up traveling to various places around the world to gather the things she needs for her pie. At the end, there is a recipe to make the apple pie.

Because we are studying geography this year, I thought this was the perfect book for learning in the kitchen. I read the book out loud to the girls. (Although it's an easy one that they could have read independently.) I had the girls find the places in the book on our small world map.

After we read the book, we set to work to make the pie. As a disclaimer, I must include the fact that I am NOT a good cook. And, although I have made some accomplishments in the kitchen over the years, I had never baked a pie. I must also include the fact that we used gluten free flour, and it cooks a little differently than regular all purpose flour.

The girls were eager to help. Maybe they'll be better cooks than me.

After we had mixed and rolled and spread, we put the pie in the oven with high hopes.

And, voila! The pie actually turned out really good. The crust didn't hold together. (I think it was the gluten free flour.) The whole thing turned out to be more cobbler than pie. But the taste was very good- especially with a dollop of whip cream or ice cream.

I'm not going to open a bakery any time soon. But it was a fun activity, and the girls are always excited to be in the kitchen.
