Tablets and Homeschooling: Why and How You Can Use Them (And a Great Giveaway)

Leah Courtney
It's unusual now to meet a child- even a young one- who doesn't know how to use a tablet. Ipads, Kindles, and Android tablets are often a popular feature in homes and in classrooms. Despite the question that some may have about whether or not young kids should use electronics so often, tablets are here to stay. So can you use a tablet effectively in your homeschool? Why can a tablet be beneficial? Here's a look at some ideas for using tablets in your homeschool.

Why tablets?

To put it succinctly, kids love tablets. They love the fast-paced games. They love the graphics. They love the ease of use. Tablets appeal to kids. So if we can use that interest and have kids use the tablets for educational purposes, everybody wins.

How can you use tablets?

Educational apps- Probably the most common way that tablets can be used in homeschooling is by using educational apps. Itunes has many, many educational apps. And the great thing is- many of these apps are free. This site has an incredible list of free educational apps. There are many educational apps for android tablets also. Here are some free educational apps from Google Play. Don't forget about the Kindle. Here are the Top 100 Free Educational Apps for Kindle currently.

Here are just a few of my favorites.
Spelling City- for Kindle, ipad, or android tablet
50 States- for Kindle or android tablet
Interactive Periodic Table of the Elements- for Kindle or android tablet
BrainPop Jr. Movie of the week- for Kindle, ipad or android tablet
Dr. Panda Teach me- for Kindle, ipad, or android tablet

Organization- There are many organizational apps for tablets- calendars, to do lists, and more. You can use these apps for your own organization or to help your kids learn how to organize themselves. There are organizational apps for ipad, for android, and for Kindle. Here are a few to get you started.
      Ziplist- for ipad or android
Evernote- for Kindle, ipad, and android
Cozi Family Organizer- for Kindle, ipad, and android
Any.Do- for Kindle, ipad and android
      Toodledo- for ipad and android

Reading- Kindle is well known for being an ereader, but ipads and android tablets both have books for purchase, and the Kindle app can work on an ipad or an android tablet as well as an actual Kindle. Being able to buy books more cheaply and to carry many books on one device are big benefits of the ereaders. Even some textbooks are now available for ereaders.
