On the Farm: Unit Study Ideas, Resources, and Free Printable Planner

One of the things I miss about having little people to homeschool is all of the fun themed unit studies we used to do. A farm unit study is very fun for preschoolers, kindergartners, and even early elementary kids. In this post, you’ll find lots of great resources for learning all about farms. And, at the bottom of the post, you can pick up my free unit study book that includes lots of literature unit studies and a unit study planner.

Farm themed books

Preschool and Kindergarten-

Moo, Baa, La, La, La by Sandra Boynton. Her books are always some of our very favorites with cute sing song rhymes and funny illustrations.

Big, Red Barn by Margaret Wise Brown. Any of Margaret Wise Brown’s children’s books draw me in with sweet words and illustrations.

Peek -a-Moo by Maria Torres Cimarusti. This is a very cute lift-the-flap book. My children wanted it read over and over and over and… until the flaps in ours had been taped and retaped.

Does a Cow Say Book by Judy Hindley. All little people love animal sounds books. This is a cute and fun animal sounds rendition.

Barn Dance by Pat Hutchins. I love the Pat Hutchins’ books with cute stories and illustrations. This one will be a hit with your little people.

Farmyard Tales by Heather Amery and Stephen Cartwright (Usborne). From waaay back when my I sold Usborne books, we all loved Farmyard Tales. These are sweet stories about adventures on the farm with cute pictures to go along.

Click Clack Moo: Cows That Type by Doreen Cronin. This book and several others by the author all feature the barn yard characters in funny situations. They’ve always been some family favorites.

Bob by Tracey Campbell Pearsons. This is another animal sounds book with a little twist that slightly older kids will enjoy.

Duck on a Bike by David Shannon. Can you imagine a duck on a bicycle? Your kids will think it funny as well.

The Chicken of the Family by Mary Amato. Any child with siblings will probably appreciate the funny twist to this story about older sisters making the younger feel a little left out.

James Herriot’s Treasury for Children by James Herriot. Herriot was an English veterinarian, and his stories have long been loved by young and old alike. This is a collection specifically for children. I love this one (as well as his longer books with stories about his vet practice.)

Chapter Books-

Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. I love this story (and the movie that goes along). It’s a gentle story that younger readers can enjoy as a read aloud or reading independently.

Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm by Kate Douglas Wiggin. This is another gentle story that would make for a fun read aloud.

Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder. and Farmer Boy by Laura Ingalls Wilder. Of course all of the classic Little House books are wonderful, and I love them. But these are probably the most “farm” themed of the set.

Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White. This is a classic and one I read to my girls not long ago. There are several movie versions that are also pretty good and are accurate to the book.

I love the paper plate pig craft on this site.

This very cute sheep craft is simple enough for little people to make.
