Review of Spiritual Parenting in the First Five Years from Graham Blanchard

Although my children are all older now, I’ve loved the opportunity to review some books from Graham Blanchard that are designed to help parents teach very young children about God. I reviewed The Sea here and Close as a Breath, Little Seed: A Life, and Jesus Saves Me here. These are board books that introduce concepts of God and His love for us in a simple way that parents can share with very young children. Now I’ve had the opportunity to take a look at a book designed specifically for parents: Spiritual Parenting in the First Five Years: God’s Plan for Early Childhood Christian Discipleship by Callie Grant.

I’ve always really appreciated that Graham Blanchard, along with the books they offer for young children, offers resources to help parents. The Learn page on their website has all kinds of resources- from mentor moms to a prayer wall to free downloads. I was happy to review this book that is now offered to guide parents of young children as they begin to disciple these children and teach them about God. Spiritual Parenting in the First Five Years can be accessed for free on the website by signing up for the newsletter. Or it can be purchased as an ebook on Amazon for $4.99.

The book is divided into five sections. Each section discusses on aspect of a young child and a way that parents can guide and teach to this aspect. The book isn’t very long or deep or profound, but it’s an excellent encouragement for new parents. Callie Grant speaks to the hearts of parents, and this book can help new parents to see that they truly do have an impact on the spiritual development of their children- even in the very early years.

I love that the words here encourage parents to be deliberate, to guide their children with intent. Callie also refers parents to God’s sovereignty, reminding them that, ultimately, He is the One Who calls our children to Himself.

Another thing that I really like is that Scripture to support what is taught is referenced at the end of each chapter. These encouraging and instructing words to parents don’t come out of the author’s head but from the principles God gives us in the Bible. And I love that that is made clear to the reader.

I think perhaps the thing I most love about this parenting resource and about the whole thrust of the work of Graham Blanchard is this. Much of teaching our children about spiritual things and introducing them to spiritual concepts has to do with just talking. As my favorite verses in Deuteronomy say- talk to your children about God all the time: when they get up, when they go to bed, when they walk along the way. Just talk. This seems to be the philosophy behind the books and resources I’ve seen from this company. They provide books and resources that will stimulate these conversations with your children.

Spiritual Parenting in the First Five Years is an excellent resource for parents of young children. Stop by the website and sign up for your free copy or visit Amazon and purchase the Kindle version.
