True Confessions of a Not So Healthy Living Mama

I’m going to write a post of confession here. Although I like to talk the big talk of making healthy choices for my family, we aren’t always eating and doing the most healthy of things. I’m confessing because I have the feeling there may be other moms like me out there- moms who feel guilty when they are serving frozen pizza for lunch…again; moms who can’t cook to save their lives and who resort to convenience foods that may or may not be healthy; moms who give in to just “a little more screen time” for the kids because I honestly don’t want to stop what I’m doing and take a walk outside with them.

If you are one of those moms, take heart. If you feel guilty every time you read a blog post about clean eating and cooking from scratch; if you shudder when you read how another mom is planning to run a 5K with their kids this year; if you’re embarrassed when you read the healthy snack recipes and know that you just handed a bag of Cheetos to your child- this post is for you. And if you don’t struggle with any of those things, oh well. Maybe it is just me that is not a healthy living mama like I want to be. In that case, they say confession is good for the soul.

At the end of the post, I’m sharing an amazing resource that will help with healthy meal planning. It will only be around for a limited time, so make sure you keep reading.

True Confessions of a Not So Healthy Living Mama:

I’m a picky eater.

It’s hard to get the kids psyched to eat broccoli and carrots when I hate them. I try. Really I do. But I’m a picky eater.

I love french fries.

All those times I give in to a swing through the McDonald’s drive thru, the kids think they’re pulling one over on me. The truth is that I love the salty, greasy, crunchy taste of the fries.

I can’t cook.

It isn’t from lack of trying. As I was growing up, my mom didn’t cook often by the time I can really remember. She’s a good cook, but it was only her, my dad, and me, and we often had busy schedules. It was much easier to meet up at a restaurant for supper or pick up a frozen dinner. When I got married, making Hamburger Helper was a cooking feat. I’ve come farther, but the whole cook from scratch thing still often eludes me. So I end up using convenience foods as at least a part of the meal.

The outdoors is not my friend.

Bugs and dirt and sweat (or shivers) aren’t really my idea of a good time. I can take a nice walk around the block and get a little exercise, but don’t ask me to go on a five mile hike. Please don’t ask me.

I love to sit.

I’m not really into screens- television, video games, movies- they don’t really hold my interest. Even Facebook gets old after a while. But give me a good book and a soft chair, and I’d love to stay there for days and days.

I think there should never be a six o clock a.m.

Whoever decided it was “normal” and good to get up before daylight and exercise was crazy. I’m just telling it like it is. Yes, I feel guilty when I read those Facebook statuses- “Up at 5:30 for a brisk five mile run. It’s exhilarating!” Really. It isn’t exhilarating for me. It’s painful and tiring.

I love sweets.

I’m a little more limited now that I eat gluten free, but there’s nothing like a good candy bar, cookie, or brownie. If I could ever find a gluten free Krispy Kreme hot and now donut, I think I’d be in heaven.

Confessions of a mom with a less than healthy lifestyle

So, there it is my friends. Although I read the healthy living blogs, and although I aspire to constantly make better decisions for myself and my family, I’m certainly not there yet. If you’re also not there yet, don’t spend all your time feeling guilty. Let’s agree to keep learning and keep trying. I have a feeling this is going to be a life long process!
