Painting Fun Without the Mess With Kwik Stix (A Schoolhouse Crew Review)

I have to say that I’ve always been a pretty laid back mom when it comes to kids’ crafting. Other than glitter- my sworn enemy- and perler beads- it’s a long story-I’ve usually allowed the kids to make a mess as long as they help to clean it up. Not too long ago, though, I was introduced through a review to Kwik Stix, an awesome product that is quick-drying tempera paint in a stick. We’ve had the opportunity to review Kwik Stix again with the Schoolhouse Crew. This time we received the Kwik Stix Neons 6 Pk and Metalix 6 Pk from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

About Kwik Stix

Kwik Stix are sticks of quick-drying tempera paint. Shaped similarly to a glue stick, kids can use them easily by rolling up the stick as they use up the paint. Because they are in a stick shape, they’re super easy for little hands if you still have little ones around. Because they dry quickly, they don’t smear easily if the child rubs across what they’ve just painted.

Have you ever let kids work on a painting craft only to have to leave it out on the table all day before it’s dry? I have. It’s a constant worry about which sibling is going to sit something on it and smear it, accidentally rub it and smear it, or knock it off the table and make it run. It isn’t fun. But Kwik Stix dry fast. So painting crafts made with Kwik Stix don’t have to sit around all day drying. That’s the awesomeness of this product.

Kwik Stix

Kwik Stix come in a variety:

The Metalix and the Neons

Having used the basic Kwik Stix colors before, we were excited to get the Metalix and Neons pack this time. Although I’ve pointed out how these painting sticks would be great for little ones, I have to say that my older kids love them as well.

Kids art supplies

My younger girls- 10 and 12- quickly began thinking up projects they could do.
The colors were perfect for a redo of their school desk dividers. They’ve had cardboard dividers up to partition off separate desks since they sit at one table to do their school work. They’ve been wanting to “pretty up” their dividers, so the neon and metallic colors were great inspiration.

We bought some spray paint and painted the dividers. Then the girls drew on them with the Kwik Stix. It was great that they could draw on the base paint, and their pictures didn’t run because the Kwik Stix dry so well.

Tempera paint

The neon colors were really pretty for trees and flowers, and the metallic colors made pretty clouds and stars.

Besides the divider boards, the kids have picked up the Kwik Stix many times for small projects. Ashlyne came up with this fireworks craft. She cut fireworks out of coffee filters and painted them with the neon sticks before glueing them to the black background.

Rachel drew these dancers onto cardboard and used primarily the metallic colors to paint them in. Again, they were great for painting on cardboard without any running.

More from The Pencil Grip, Inc.

Besides our Kwik Stix, we received some pencil grips in our package from The Pencil Grip, Inc. A variety of rubber pencil grips is the premier product of the company. These grips come is different shapes and sizes to be used for handwriting at different stages. I’ve done a full review of the pencil grips here. If you have children who struggle with their pencil grip, check them out.

Our opinions

We absolutely love Kwik Stix. The girls love how easy it easy to pull them out and paint most anything. I love how easy they are to use and to clean up.
The metallic and neon colors were a great complement to our basic colors. I was impressed at how both showed up on the different papers and cardboard they were used on. The neons are truly bright and vivid, and the metallics glitter and shine.

Kwik Stix

My only regret about Kwik Stix is that I didn’t have them when I had toddlers and preschoolers who loved crafting and creating.
