I have to admit that none of my kids were ever hugely hung up on Legos. That’s not to say they didn’t like them. But we didn’t have large numbers of overflowing bins full of the little blocks. I have had kids that enjoy building, however. We’ve used a variety of toys that involve building structures large and small.
If you have kids who love to build on your gift list, here are some gift ideas…that don’t include Legos. Some of these go beyond building to remote control features or electric motorization, and some are more classic. But all of them will be enjoyed by the little- or not so little- builders on your list.

Young builders- 5+- can connect the pieces of this building set with gears. Then they can motorize their structures and cause them to light up.

My kids have always enjoyed K’NEX building pieces because of the variety in the types of pieces used for building. This line of K’NEX will especially appeal to girls because of the colors and because the characters on the packaging are girls. This set is a home design set, but there are quite a few of the Mighty Makers sets available.

This is a classic K’NEX set. With the 480 pieces here, kids can build thirty-five different models or their own unique creations. As a bonus, I really love the cool case these come in.

The Laser Pegs building bricks are compatible with other plastic brick building sets. The include a battery powered base that lights up. The bricks are clear colors, so the structure lights up when completed.

The ZOOB plastic building pieces are unique because they connect in a ball-and-socket style that allows creations to bend and have moving parts. The 250 piece set here has instructions for 36 projects. Or kids can create their own.
