Fun Picture Books for Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day is fast approaching, and I’m hoping for a speedy end to winter. I’m never sure exactly what shadow vs. non-shadow means, but I just want it to be spring. We’ve not had a bad winter in my neck of the woods…yet. And that makes me a little nervous about what could happen if we have six more weeks of winter!

I’ve always thought Groundhog Day was such a funny holiday. It’s a fun one to share with the kids because it gives you the opportunity to talk about traditions and how stories about them get started. Plus, groundhogs are just darn cute!

Now on to groundhog books…
Ever wondered exactly how groundhog day got started? Me too. This book by Gail Gibbons- one of my favorite children’s authors- tells bow the holiday came into being and tells the story of the famous Punxsutawney Phil who comes out to look for his shadow each year.

Groundhog’s Dilemma by Kristen Remenar

In another fictional story, Groundhog’s friends are divided in their response to his latest weather forecasting. Some are thrilled. Others are disappointed and want a more favorable response next year. Instead of just telling the truth about his predictions, Groundhog has them convinced he can control the weather. Maybe he should just come clean and tell the truth.
