Valentine's Day Picture Books

Valentine’s Day can be such a fin holiday to celebrate with the kids. For years when my guys were younger, we hosted a Valentine’s Day party for other homeschoolers. It wasn’t anything fancy, but the kids exchanged valentines, did some cute crafts, and ate heart cupcakes.

Even though we seem to be phasing out of that season of life, I love the idea of valentines and candy and hearts and fun. So I’m sharing a collection of Valentine’s Day picture books that you can share with the kids around your house. Better yet, host your own Valentine’s Day party and read a few then.

Happy Valentine’s Day, Mouse! by Laura Numeroff

This book features the lovable mouse from the “If You Give a…” books. The story follows Mouse as he’s making valentines for his friends. And in typical Mouse style, one thing always leads to another.

Cute mice, pink hearts, lots of stickers, and a sweet story of friendship- what’s not to love?

I’ve been in love with Little Critter since I was a kid and got a book signed by Mercer Mayer. He’s always trying to do the right thing, but trouble just seems to come his way. This lift-the-flap picture book is all about Little Critter’s special valentine. Who will it be for?
This book is by the illustrator of the “If You Give a Mouse…” books. Cornelia Augusta catches hearts on the day they rain down. Each heart is special, and she can think of an animal friend it would be just right for.

In this is classic Valentine’s Day story. Mr. and Mrs.Bear have never celebrate Valentine’s Day because they hibernate in the winter. But one year, Mrs. Bear decides to change this.

The Story of Valentine’s Day by Clyde Robert Bulla– This picture book for kindergarten and early elementary aged kids goes beyond the frilly valentines and candy to tell kids the story behind the holiday. Who was St. Valentine? And how did Valentine’s Day get started anyway?
