5 Must Have Kitchen Appliances for the Mediocre Cook

Friends, I’ve said it before, but I am not a good cook. I’m just not. I’ll admit that I’ve come a looong, looong way from the new wife who considered Hamburger Helper a gourmet, home-cooked meal, but I have another looong way to go before anyone would consider me a foodie either.

To compensate for my shortcomings, I’ve come to rely on several favorite kitchen appliances. They don’t necessarily make me a good cook, but they do help me to make do. If you, like me, suffer from the inability to ever really conquer this cooking thing once and for all, maybe these appliances will make your life a little easier as well.

Ninja Mega Kitchen System

Why it’s awesome: This set truly does it all. It has the blender, food processor, and smoothie pieces. My kids can make smoothies on their own because it’s so simple. I can mix, chop, crush, blend anything at all. Best of all, it is all easy to use. It didn’t take a 500 page guide to get started.

Bonus: This system looks so awesomely professional that people assume I must really know my way around the kitchen when they see it!

KitchenAid Mixer

Why it’s awesome: Several of our family members are gluten free eaters, so I’ve tried my hand at gluten free baking. The gluten free flours tend to be more dense and harder to mix, and my KitchenAid mixer can handle it all.

Bonus: There are all kinds of cool attachments for the KitchenAid mixer. I have the dough hook which is great when you’re mixing breads. But you can also get attachments that process meat, slice and shred, cut pasta, and much more. I haven’t even begun to tap into the power of this appliance.

Programmable Slow Cooker

Why it’s awesome: We have six people in our family, six busy people. On many nights, we’re out and about at the traditional supper hour. With this slow cooker, I can start supper early in the day, and Voila!, it’s ready when come home from all our running around. And slow cooker meals are so simple- just throwing ingredients in and setting the time and temperature- that even a mediocre cook like me can’t mess them up too badly.
Bonus: I have the slow cooker with the locking lid pictured here. This is great for taking the slow cooker to a gathering where I need to bring food. It also helps keep cooking smells in because I don’t really like my house to smell like supper all day.

Digital Rice Cooker

Why it’s awesome: Because we eat gluten free, I do lots of rice. Rice with chicken, rice with beef, rice with…just about anything. Using a rice cooker is super easy. I can dump in the rice and water in the afternoon and turn it on. It cooks and then keeps warm until we’re ready to use it with supper.
Bonus: My kids were older when we got the rice cooker, but even younger kids could learn to use it easily. It doesn’t get hot on the outside, and there are measurement lines for everything, so it’s easy to see how much rice and water to use. Put the kids to work helping with supper!
Must-have kitchen appliances

Why it’s awesome: This is probably my very favorite appliance right now. I was always afraid of traditional pressure cookers, but I heard such wonderful things about the InstaPot, I had to try it. I can cook supper from chicken straight out of the freezer to on our plates ready to eat in a little over a half hour. This thing is amazing!
Bonus: There are cool things you can do in the InstaPot that I haven’t even tried yet- making yogurt, cooking desserts, boiling eggs easily. I’m still learning as I go.
**** If you have an InstaPot and are afraid to give a try, check out the new Electric Pressure Cooking 101 Class from Erin Chase of My FreezEasy. I’ve been looking at the videos and learning. She’s covering the basics and a little beyond, as well as demonstrating recipes and techniques. She’s also got a Facebook group with the class, so we can chat and ask questions about getting the most out of the InstaPot.****
