Shark Wake Park: Family Fun in North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Our family goes to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina at least twice a year. Because the beach is only about three and a half hours from our home, I grew up going to the beach yearly. Now we go one week with my husband's extended family to stay in the house of a friend and one week with just our family to stay in our timeshare.

It's fun to go back over and over to a place we know, a place where we have many memories of family vacations. It's fun to do some of the same things year after year- hang out on the beach for several mornings when we're at the house or hang out at the pool all day when we're at the timeshare, visit Barefoot Landing and Broadway at the Beach, tour the Ripley's Aquarium. But it's fun to find new, fun adventures as well.

Disclosure: I received free admission for my family- six of us- in exchange for a post. All opinions are always my own, and I was not compensated in any other way.

During a recent week at the beach, we were super excited to have the opportunity to visit an adventure site that we had often seen but never tried. We went to Shark Wake Park.

What is Shark Wake Park?

Shark Wake Park was established in 2016. It's located in the North Myrtle Beach Sports complex- which is an awesome place with other adventurous activities and outdoor fun. There are two main parts to Shark Wake Park.

The Aqua Park is a huge floating obstacle course in the lake. There are lots of obstacles to climb over, run across, and jump from. You can pay for forty-five minute sessions or you can purchase a day pass to the park. There is a small beach fronting the lake where those who would rather not climb around can rest. Although all participants do wear life jackets, you are supposed to be able to swim to play in the Aqua Park area.

The Wake Park has a cable system to pull wake boards and knee boards. Beginners are welcome, and if you do have some experience, you can use the ramps available. You can pay for a two-hour pass or for an all-day pass to the Wake Park. Equipment is included, although there is a less-expensive pass if you have your own.

A look at our day at Shark Wake Park...

We were able to get the forty-five minute Aqua Park passes as well as two-hour beginner's session passes for the Wake Park. We had other family members from our beach trip who wanted to try the park as well. (My brother-in-law took most of the great pictures here!)

The Aqua Park was so much fun. We arrived a little late, so we missed a few minutes of our forty-five. Your session begins at a specific time, not when you show up!

We still had lots of fun. I even gave it a try, although I had such difficulty balancing, I eventually gave up.

After a rest, we got equipment for those who were going to go to the Wake Park. There was a short walk up the beach to get to it. Most of the group tried knee boards first since they were total beginners. A few ended up trying the actual wake boards later.

Those of us who didn't want to wakeboard hung out at the Shark Shack, an awesome little place with drinks- alcoholic or not- and food. It's great because there are places to sit and a deck where you can easily watch the wake boarders.

This was a very fun family activity. I'm not sure how successful any of us were to learn to wake board, but...

Why is Shark Wake Park an excellent family activity?

We had a great experience at Shark Wake Park. If you're in the Myrtle Beach area for your vacation time, I can highly recommended this as a fun family day activity.
  • Any kids at least 7 years old who are able to swim can participate, so it's fun for the whole family.
  • The park is easy to get to, only a few minutes from Main Street in North Myrtle Beach, so whether you're staying in North Myrtle Beach or Myrtle Beach itself, you can enjoy the park.
  • There are good places to sit and wait if you want to watch family members participate but not join in the action for yourself. There's the beach and some picnic tables in front of the Aqua Park as well as the Shark Shack where you can sit and easily watch the wake boarders.
  • With the beginner's package, all your wakeboarding equipment is provided, and if you- like all our party- have never tried wakeboarding, there's a video you can watch to learn more about how the pulley system works and how to wakeboard.
