No Worries, Mom! Easily Cover Homeschool Science Classes for High School...Even With No Science Background

I grew up attending a small, private, Christian school. Despite our school being much smaller than public school, we really did have great teachers and academic opportunities…most of the time. Science, however, was a struggle.

Over the years we had a number of different science teachers- some with more knowledge than others. Our small school couldn’t afford some of the lab equipment that larger public schools had. So science labs were a hit or miss affair as well. All in all I will say that I definitely didn’t have a great science background.

Homeschool Science in Elementary School

When my children were young, science was easy. We read and did experiments, and it was easy to learn along with my kids. But as they neared high school, I knew that my science knowledge was too limited to really help them with high school science courses.
So what’s a homeschool mom with limited science knowledge to do about high school science? Here are some ideas as well as an awesome resource that will help you with high school science.

Homeschool Science Online

One of the great resources for homeschooling high school science is online classes. Online classes give kids the opportunity to learn from teachers who actually know about and are passionate about science.

There are several different types of online classes. Some give kids prerecorded streaming videos, often accompanied by a workbook, and kids have the opportunity to watch the labs that accompany the subject. Other online classes give kids the chance to attend class live with a teacher and other students in the “classroom.”

College Prep Science is one of the sites that offers these live high school science classes. This resource offers a number of high school level science classes. Many are two semester courses, and there are a few one semester courses as well. They offer a few classes that would be appropriate for kids younger than high school (6th-9th grade). Here are the classes they are currently offering.

– Biology – College Prep (9th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Life Prep Biology (8th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Chemistry – College Prep (10th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Life Prep Chemistry (9th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Physics – College Prep (10th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Life Prep Physics (9th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Human Anatomy & Physiology (9th-12th) – Two Semester Class
– Exercise and Sports Physiology (8th-12th) – One Semester Class
– Pre-Anatomy & Physiology (6th-9th) – One Semester Class
– Pre-Chemistry (6th-9th) – – One Semester Class

They have a few other classes beginning in January and in May. You can see the complete class list here. If you’re not sure which course your child should take, they have some recommendations on the site.
These classes are taught from a Christian perspective. Students attend the live class, but can also watch a recorded class if they have conflicts with the live class time. There are assignments to be turned in weekly. Students complete virtual labs, using the same program that many public schools now use for high school labs, and take tests as well.
The teacher for all of these classes is Greg Landry. He is a homeschool dad and was a college professor. He is a young earth creationist and a Christian. He’s taught homeschooled students and college students for a number of years.

Live Classes for Homeschool High School Science

Live classes, taught by a teacher who knows and loves science, are also a great option for homeschool science in high school. You can often find a co-op or other group that offers high school classes for homeschoolers. And giving kids the experience to learn in that type of environment is a great way to get those science credits covered…and possibly instill a lifelong love of science in your child.
College Prep Science also offers live high school science classes. Greg Landry teaches two-day intensive courses that will provide your high school students with a full year’s science credit. These intensive course include Biology/Anatomy and Physiology as well as Chemistry.
There are a variety of locations offered for these two-day intensives in the fall and in the spring. I think that these would be an awesome way to cover high school science because kids are going to get to learn from a teacher passionate about his subject as well as having the opportunity to do some hands-on science labs with other students.

More About College Prep Science

Besides offering Christ-centered science classes, College Prep Science has some other resources for homeschoolers. Kids can take their ACT Prep Bootcamp or CLEP Biology Prep classes as well.

The ACT Prep class is a little less than a month long and will prepare kids for the ACT, teaching them strategies for taking the test as well as giving them opportunities to take practice tests. There is homework in the class. And the class is intensive enough to count as a high school credit for study skills or test taking.

A CLEP test can give a student college credit for a class…without them having to complete the actual class in college. It’s a great way to earn credits that will help cover some of the general education requirements in college. The CLEP Biology test will prepare kids for taking the test to earn a credit for basic college biology.

Greg Landry from College Prep Science has some great new things coming in the month of August including a podcast called Homeschool Moms Science Podcast, geared toward helping homeschool moms to teach science, a Homeschool Science Research Journal for Homeschooled 8th – 12th grade students, and a Homeschool Science Art Journal for Homeschooled 8th – 12th grade students. You can check the website to watch for these things.

Readers can also get 8% off of any online class through August 31 when you use the code H8 at check out.
