High School Writing Basics Online

 Do you want to prepare your student for high school writing? High School Writing Basics is a live online class that will prepare students for writing in high school and beyond.

High school writing basics

This class is taught by Leah Courtney, a veteran homeschool mom and educator. She has an undergraduate degree in elementary education and special education and a master's degree in reading education. She's had the opportunity to teach in a traditional classroom, as well as in homeschool co-op groups, and through online classes.

High School Writing Basics Description

The class will use The Power in Your Hands textbook from Sharon Watson. Students will learn to write:

  • Persuasive essays
  • Compare/contrast essays
  • Biographies
  • Literature analysis
  • Research papers
  • And more
This class is appropriate for young high school students who want to be prepared for the kinds of writing they'll encounter in high school classes, but it can also be useful for older students who need to be better prepared for college or professional writing.

This class will be offered on Mondays from 10a-11a EST.

High School Writing Basics Class Information for 2022-23:

These are live classes. Each class will be recorded, so you'll be able to see it if you miss it. But there is not a separate option for just recorded students.

Students will be using Zoom and Google Classroom for classes. Class assignments and grades will be handled through Google Classroom. Students will need a gmail account to access Google Classroom.

Your student will receive grades, and these classes will be something you can put on your student's transcript. This class will be worth one year's writing credit. Ultimately you, as a homeschooling parent, are responsible for assigning the grade. So you can override any grade your student earns because you know of any extenuating circumstances your student might have. Points will not off for late work. But if any work isn't turned in by the time midterm grades and then end of year grades are issued, That work will count as a 0.


Classes will run from the week of August 22 to the week of May 8.

Class Schedule:

Monday- High School Writing Basics  10a-11a EST
              General Literature 11:30a- 12:30p EST
Wednesday- American History 1 10a-11a EST
                    American History 2 11:30a-12:30p EST
                    World History 1p-2p EST
Friday- American Literature 10a-11a EST
            British Literature 11:30a-12:30p EST


There are three ways you can choose to pay.

Pay for the full year at once- $350

Pay one semester at a time- $180 per semester

Nine monthly payments of $45 a month

If you register for a class, it is assumed that your student will take the class all year long, and you'll pay both semesters or all nine months if you choose those options.


Please fill out the attached Google Form if you're interested.  You'll receive a confirmation, and your student will be added to a waiting list. A minimum of five students is needed for the class to open. If the class does not have five students by July 15, the class will be closed and you will be notified by email.

Once the class has at least five students, you'll receive an email with a PayPal link to pay. Payment will be due by August 15, the week before classes start.
